Wildlife Refuge

Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Pacific Coast, near Punta Uvita and Ballena Marine National Park.It counts on 506ha of primary and secondary tropical wet forest, besides pastures, mangroves next to Morete River and the beach. Furthermore, it offers different environments to explore nature; it is easy to find amazing birds, reptiles, insects, and mammals.Here, you will enjoy hiking on the reserves trails, admiring the tropical rainforest and mangroves, riding horses just for pleasure, and visiting the Ballena Marine National Park, which is to be found adjacent to the refuge.Rancho La Merced has been protected from hunting for many years and it is an active member of the Asociacion de Amigos de la Naturaleza del Pacífico Central y Sur (ASANA). Furthermore, Rancho is part of the Tapirs Path Wildlife Corridor.It was recently awarded with the Bandera Azul Ecológica and the Certificación de Sostenibilidad Turística (CST) from the Costa Rican Tourism Bureau.

Horseback Riding

Experienced and inexperienced riders will enjoy the ride in Rancho La Merced.Our horses are carefully trained for you to have a pleasant experience, as you go through the refuge amidst the forest, on the beach or in the river. You may visit Playa Hermosa, adjacent to Ballena Marine National Park, ride on the woods or toward the waterfall and take a dip, or enjoy an astonishing sunset. All of these within the reserve!Several points of interest can be found here, such as environmentally sustainable livestock operation, nature or the pleasure of riding a horse. Groups are kept individualized as they book the tour, in order to have an enjoyable experience.Options:-Tour to the waterfall through the tropical rainforest.-Tour to Playa Hermosa.-Sunset Tour.*Children are welcome. We have saddles for children from 7 years and older. Nature Hikes

Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge has a series of trails to walk through primary and secondary forests, and plains; giving you the opportunity to observe the protected flora and fauna.Come and experience how insects, birds, mammals and reptiles behave in their natural habitats; and observe the great variety of tropical plants.Some of the trails are on the hills of the reserve and the Morete River basin. Because of the vast open space and forest, this is an excellent occasion to admire wildlife.The hike covers areas where the howler monkeys are always listened in the morning.Nocturnal walk: Nightlife in the jungle! Here, you will observe the other side of the rainforest, searching for creatures that are not seen during the day. Minimum: 2 people. Time: 7 p.m.Self-guided walk: enjoy our trails as you please. Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge is home of a great diversity of birds. More than 310 species has been counted in the refuge and its surroundings.Since 1971, the conservation of different natural habitats found in the reserve, has attracted a lot of birds, mammals, insects and reptiles. All these animals have found in Rancho, a sanctuary for feeding and breeding in the forests, wetlands and mangroves.The trails go through various habitats, giving you the chance to spot an impressive number of birds for maximizing your birding experience in Costa Rica. Rancho La Merced proximity to the beach and the Ballena Marine National Park, gives the opportunity of observing interesting species at the seaside.Our guides will take you to a wonderful hike, helping you to count the number of birds found in the refuge, explaining their behavior, and sharing the valuable information about this neotropical bird sanctuary with you. Cowboy Tour

It consists of riding with the cowboys; herding cattle, check cows and calf that are in the grass, learn to how to rope calves, and other activities proper of the Rancho.Rancho La Merced is a cattle ranch dedicated to the breeding of meat, whose production is in harmony with the ecological balance of tropical rainforest and the surrounding mangroves.Here you can be a real cowboy!Depending on the season that you visit us, you will be able to ride with the cowboys, do cattle roping, and many other tasks that are carried out by our staff; in a normal workday in Rancho La Merced.Minimum 2 people.Cowboy Tour .......................................................$45.00 +$10 for Private Tour

Our lodging amenities are located at 800 meters from the highway, over the hill, in a peaceful place, at the base of the Costeña or Brunqueña Mountain Range.La Cabina: one bedroom with a double bed, 1 room with a single bed. It counts with electricity, fan, kitchenette with coffee maker, microwave oven and refrigerator. Private parking.Price: US$85 per night, 3 persons. US$10 for aditional person.*Children under 2 years old are free. Children from 2 up to 12 years old are charged 50% of the rate. 13 year old children and older pay as adults.*It is advisable to have your own transportation so you can freedom of movement for getting your meals or go to the restaurants in town.
